The CDC reported that opioids killed more than 42,000 people in 2016 in the US. The AHRQ reports that between 2005 and 2014 the national rate of opioid-related inpatient stays increased 64.1 percent and the national rate of opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits increased by 99.4 percent. The prevalence of opioid addiction has risen most recently to the level of a healthcare crisis.
