Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Healthcare

April 29, 2021 | 5:00pm – 6:30pm | 1.5 F2F Credits

REGISTER HERE

Join us for another fantastic virtual event presented by the American College of Healthcare Executives – NJ Chapter.

The communities for which healthcare organizations operate are rapidly diversifying. Not only do they provide care for a diverse community of patients and families, but their workforce is also changing, and at times does not reflect the patient community. This diversity is exhibited in a number of ways, including ethnicity, race, religion, socioeconomic status, language, age, sexual orientation/gender identity, and physical ability.

The business implications and imperatives healthcare organizations face concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion are immense. Diverse communities often require different care needs, improved quality, new or modified operational processes and services, and strategic planning for a varied patient demographic. The continuum of care will need to be considered to best meet the needs of these communities.

It is incumbent on healthcare organizations and their leaders to both understand and embrace the needs of diverse populations. Leader’s abilities to respond to the needs and preferences of a broader customer base will be critical to their financial and operational success.

Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare Delivery

April 15, 2021 | 5:00pm – 6:30pm | 1.5 F2F Credits

REGISTER HERE

Join us for this incredible virtual event presented by the American College of Healthcare Executives – NJ Chapter.

Disruptive innovation, a term coined by Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen, is a transformative business model that leverages technology to help focus on making products and services more accessible and affordable. In healthcare delivery, disruptive innovations have the potential to decrease costs while improving both the quality and accessibility of care.

Disruptive innovations enable new applications and changes in behaviors. The current thinking with many innovators is a belief that a host of disruptive innovations would have wide implications for payers by shifting payment models to reward precision diagnostic tests and abilities of providers. Several current disruptive innovations like retail clinics, telemedicine, medical tourism, and point-of-care medical payments are making a major difference in how health care is delivered.

This panel will focus on the role of innovation in the medical marketplace and examples of disruptive innovations that will change lives in health care.

TOPIC: “Telemedicine and the Healthcare Delivery System”

This webinar will present the current and future role of telemedicine in the delivery of healthcare. Many health systems leveraged on-demand virtual visits to triage patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they soon realized that virtual care would also play a large role in providing ongoing care to existing patients. The rapid expansion of telehealth has created new opportunities, but also a lot of questions. Participants will discuss changes to telehealth because of COVID-19.

Senior Consultant, Research
Advisory Board

John League leads Advisory Board’s ongoing global research on health care technology, including analytics, artificial intelligence, digital strategy, electronic medical records, and telehealth.

John has also led research for Advisory Board’s Philanthropy Leadership Council. His philanthropy research developed new-in-kind, proprietary data sets to answer essential questions about grateful patient programs, philanthropy performance benchmarking, digital strategy, and fundraising campaigns.

Prior to joining Advisory Board, John worked as an editor of investment research for high-net-worth investors.

“Behavioral Healthcare:
Approaches to Increase Value for the Organization and Meet Community Needs”

Historically, hospitals and health systems have not always embraced a role in meeting behavioral health needs in communities because managing behavioral healthcare and mental health is very complex. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year. The rate of youth with severe depression increased from 5.9% in 2012 to 8.2% in 2015. Nearly half (45 percent) of those with any mental disorder also meet criteria related to having a physical illness or substance abuse. Physical health and mental health issues occur together.

For example, people with diabetes or cardiac conditions often develop depression as well. Being able to receive treatment for both conditions through an integrated behavioral health and primary care setting can be especially helpful since how we live our lives (behave) and our physical and mental health all interact with each other in complex ways….

SPEAKER:

Anna M. (De Santis) Villani, LCSW, MPA
Division Administrator, Ambulatory and Community Psychiatry – NYC H+H / Bellevue Hospital
Adjunct Instructor – Lehman College of the City University of New York
Candidate – Fellow of American College of Healthcare Executives
Member – American College of Healthcare Executives; Healthcare Leaders of New York; Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society

Anna M. (De Santis) Villani, LCSW, MPA is the Administrative Director of Addiction Programs, which is made up of Opiate Treatment Program, Chemical Dependency Program, CATCH/ED Leads, Virtual Bupe Clinic and Ancillary Withdrawal Program at NYC H+H / Bellevue. After transforming services in Ambulatory and Community Psychiatry, which is made up of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, Assertive Treatment Program and OnTrack NY and Mrs. Villani was recruited to transform Addiction Programs. Mrs. Villani is instrumental in the current transforming services from an inpatient detox program to ambulatory services while building up the medical and psychiatric component in the Addiction Programs.

As a first generation immigrant, Mrs. Villani has a particular interest in working with families of all cultural backgrounds. She understands the unique needs and challenges that families face, in particular the barriers and resulting dynamics that evolve between parents, children and care providers as families attempt to navigate systems and access care. Mrs. Villani graduated with a psychology degree from St. John’s University and began working with foster children performing emergency placements in the City of New York. Her passion in working for the families and children of New York City led her to pursue a Masters in Social Work. She subsequently worked as an Early Intervention Coordinator and Pediatric Social Worker.

Understanding the complexities that affect families and interested in making systems change that would better serve NYC families, she began working for the nation’s largest public health care system – NYC Health + Hospitals / Coney Island Hospital. She served as a program coordinator building a mental health peer counseling program, a recovery oriented program based in psychiatry, and later became the mental health ambulatory clinic director serving both as a clinical and administrative lead focusing on increasing access to mental health care and reducing hospital readmission while focusing on recovery in the ambulatory psychiatry setting.

Mrs. Villani was later recruited to NYC H+H / Bellevue to restructure ambulatory services with a focus transforming the system to a patient centered delivery of care with a focus on access. Applying her clinical and management acumen, Mrs. Villani was able to ensure the alignment of divisional goals with the overall strategic goals of the corporation. She is responsible for shaping strategies that ensure growth, access to care and success in the Division of Ambulatory and Community Psychiatry while promoting quality measures and management of organization risk.

With a demonstrated track record of transforming services, aligning programs with organization goals and improving fiscal performance, Mrs. Villani was then recruited to transform services and build the Addiction Programs. She applies her experience to teach and mentor the next generation of leaders, teaching Strategic Healthcare Management and serving as Field Instructor at The City University of New York (CUNY) / Lehman College
